Jasmine Shea, a nutrition consultant for Bubs Naturals and founder of Your Dinner Is Planned, was kind enough to share her tips on how to avoid common mistakes when making turkey. There are plenty of helpful tips and tricks for making this year’s Thanksgiving the most delicious.

1. Be careful not to clean your turkey prior to when you cook it
The idea is that washing the raw turkey will kill any bacteria that could cause food poisoning. The bacteria can infect your kitchen if you rinse the bird. After handling turkeys, all must wash their hands at a minimum of 20 times. To kill bacteria in turkey, cook it at the appropriate temperature for the internal temperature.
2. You could make a mistake. Thaw the turkey on the counter
To ensure your turkey’s safety, don’t allow it to freeze in the refrigerator. The ideal conditions for bacteria development in a room temperature environment can cause serious illness to your family and guests.
3. Do not make the error of thawing your turkey in water
You can thaw turkey in a bowl of water instead of the refrigerator. But you must change the water every 30 minutes. The CDC suggests this to ensure the turkey remains secure and to stop harmful bacteria from developing.
4. Do not allow the turkey to sit out for more than two hours
This is the most dangerous Thanksgiving-related mistake you could make this holiday season. The CDC will announce that you’ve exceeded the safe limit within two hours. If you let your turkey sit on the counter or in the car for more than two hours, it’s best to be secure and purchase an entirely new turkey.
5. Do not make a mistake: if you are not able to cook the turkey immediately, don’t buy a fresh one.
It is important to ensure that the date you buy fresh turkeys from your local butcher, meat vendor or grocer coincides with the plans for your Thanksgiving dinner. If the turkey was purchased fresh, you’ll need to cook it right away. The USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service stipulates that fresh turkeys must be kept in the fridge for no more than 1-2 days.
